When the US Navy sought to remove some 31 outdated and obsolete buildings and structures from the Submarine Base in Groton, CT, they hired P&S Construction along with demolition subcontractor Costello Dismantling. A total of 425,000 square feet of obsolete office buildings, barracks, water standpipes, and warehouses were removed and the work areas restored to their original condition. The buildings were located throughout the entire Naval base property.
What made this project unique was the fact that it was issued by the Navy as a Design-Build Contract. This method of contracting is rarely utilized in demolition projects and places added responsibilities on the participating contractors.
Costello Dismantling worked closely with P&S Construction and the Navy to create and implement site security plans, traffic management plans, environmental management plans, and demolition plans. Thorough planning and coordination with the owner allowed the demolition work to be completed at roughly 25 different work areas safely and with minimal disruption to ongoing Navy operations.
