PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER PLANT MET TOWER REMOVAL

Location:

Plymouth, MA

Award Date:

February 2020

Completed:

February 2020

Client:

United Civil

Combatting fog and frigid temperatures, Costello Dismantling employees recently disassembled a 160’ tall MET Communications Tower at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, MA. The 16 ft.wide (at base) triangular steel tower had presided over the site for over 40 years. It was separated into four pre-engineered 40 ft. lifts by workers suspended in a man basket by one crane while a second crane lowered the tower sections to the ground. All workers had gone through safety and fall protection training that day to ensure proper use of fall protection equipment. A dropped object prevention plan was utilized to eliminate the potential risk of hard hats and tools inadvertently plummeting to the ground below. Once the tower pieces were brought to the ground, they were mechanically sheared by our excavator and hauled away in roll-off containers. All four lifts were accomplished in one day due to a day with no wind, and of course the skill and forethought of all those involved. Photo credit: Sean Rae
