Serenity House Revisited

by Dan Costello, President

We were recently called upon by two great clients, R.H. White and Eversource, to demolish and remove a large residential group home in Hopkinton, MA.  The Serenity House, which had been vacant for years, abutted an Eversource facility in a very rural wooded area.  Serenity was originally constructed as a dormitory for 60 seasonal workers from the Weston Nurseries.  At the time, Weston Nurseries was the largest grower of high-quality trees and shrubs for the landscaping industry in New England.

We provided demolition and removal of the structure, then processed and crushed all the clean concrete foundation and footings to a consistent 3” minus aggregate using our new Genesis bucket crusher mounted on a Volvo 480E excavator.  The foundation was a perfect material for processing into fill.  An integral magnet on the crusher allowed us to remove and recover all reinforcing steel.  The steel was recovered as scrap.  The processed concrete and site fill features were graded to restore the area to a natural contour and setting.

The demolished wood structure was delivered locally to E.L. Harvey in Westborough, MA for recycling.  The wood recovered from that waste stream will be processed and sized for acceptance at a particle board manufacturer in Canada.  Between the beneficial reuse of concrete, wood recovery of C&D material by E.L. Harvey, and scrap metal recovery, we achieved a recycling percentage of over 90% of the Serenity House waste stream.

The lead on this project was Mike Costello and overseen by project superintendent, Grey Geyer.  Coincidentally, Greg was also the superintendent responsible for building the Serenity House over 30 years ago.  “The removal and recovery of the building was bittersweet, but it had served a good purpose,“ reflected Greg.  We all commend Mike, Greg and the Costello crew of Ed Ouellet, Mark Cohen, Frank Darche, Homar Cabrera and Billy Jones for their efficient and expedient dismantling of Serenity House.
