This project consisted of the dismantling of 3 buildings at the Mass General Hospital complex in downtown Boston. The height of the buildings and the proximity to active facilities created a unique set of challenges for our work.
The buildings included a ten-story, steel and concrete structure located within feet of the active intensive care unit, a five-story structure located adjacent to the emergency room, and a three story building located at the ambulance entrance to the hospital. Due to the extremely sensitive surrounding environment and the need to not disturb the hospital operations, we utilized small robotic demolition machines to dismantle the buildings adjacent to active facilities and to remove the upper floors that could not be reached from the ground with our excavators.
The project was completed 2 weeks ahead of schedule, under budget, with minimal disruption to the hospital, and no accidents or safety issues.
Over 98% of the demolition debris was recycled.
